On Friday, a group of us visited Woodfine Wine in Seer Green (one of the very few natural winemakers in the country), for a tour of the organic conversion farm and vineyard & to sample their chemical- / additive- / sugar-free wine & cider.

Woodfine Wine is set in a breathtakingly beautiful location at Newbarn Farm, a 300 year old smallholding on Newbarn Lane. When we visited, the heavens well-and-truly opened, however this didn’t dampen our spirits and we enjoyed a very interesting evening, hosted by Richard Woodfine and Liz Read, touring the vineyard & the new barn.

Richard shared with us their mission to restore a biodiverse ecosystem to produce exceptional organic produce – with wine at its heart- for the local community and beyond.  Wherever they can, they try to keep produce, money & work local – from the local artists that created the artwork and branding on the labels on the wine bottles, to the locals that tend the hens and fruit and veg… there really is a sense of community.

All the wine is made in the vineyard in an off-grid winery using only hand power and cold water with ZERO additives – they focus on small batch wines (producing about 1,200 bottles of wine a year with nothing in it apart from grapes). Historically, their grapes have come from Seer Green, Dropmore Vineyard (near Cliveden) plus some from East Sussex to make up the numbers.  Whilst at the new barn we got to sample grape/apple juice and cider / wine straight from the barrels and tanks at different stages of the fermentation process…which is active now as harvest is in progress across the country.

After the tour we headed back to the old Tithe Barn to taste some bottled sparkling wine & cider alongside cheese, meats and breads from local suppliers including Chiltern Charcuterie, Nettlebed Cheese and the Deli in Chalfont St Giles.

It was such a lovely evening – Woodfire Wine really is a hidden gem and Richard’s passion and vision for Woodfine Wine is very inspiring. We would highly recommend the tour & tasting for a fun night out with a group of friends. Tours & Tastings for couples to groups of up to 20 people can be made by arrangement, plus you get 10% off all purchases made on the night.

On a separate note, if you fancy a staycation or have family coming to visit, the farmhouse with pool/hot tub, 2-bed farm cottage & Tithe Barn are available for bookings (by email or through Airbnb) – you can have a nose at the house here.
