At the weekend we headed to Dorney Lake (a purpose-built rowing lake near the village of Dorney & around 3 km west of Windsor and Eton) as we fancied a change of scenery. The lake is right by the River Thames and perfect for cycling, scooting and walking. There is a path from the car park and Boat House to the Thames (although we didn’t go to the river this time but definitely worth considering) if you want a longer walk.
When we arrived (around 11am), the car park by Eton Dorney West was full so we ended up parking on the road (which we found out afterwards isn’t allowed ?), however there is a car park by the Boat House which is accessible from noon onwards (this is of course subject to change so check the website before travelling). The main gates open at 9.00am each morning and close promptly at 7.00pm, so you need to exit the site before 7.00pm. The charges to use the pay & display car park have been suspended until further notice due to COVID19. Worth mentioning that all the public amenities (including the WC) are closed at the moment so take food and drinks with you.
We enjoyed a 5km walk around the lake and stopped for a picnic near the Boat House. If you’re looking for country walk (run, scoot and cycle …..) in flat conditions were the path is paved then this is for you. It’s a very pretty setting and we will definitely go back again soon.
