“Our role is to inspire, support and foster a love of learning.” Debbie Isaachsen, Headteacher
Establishing and nurturing essential skills from an early age equips children with the mind-set and persistence to face life’s challenges and become independent learners. Children who join Heatherton via its popular Early Years Department benefit from being tracked pastorally and academically, from the moment they join Nursery, ensuring that no child is overlooked or lost in the crowd.
A variety of specialist teaching, from the Nursery upwards, including STEM, PE, Ballet, Music and Art, inspires our pupils from an early age. As well as using the excellent Early Years’ facilities, the children have access to other areas of the school and feel part of the Heatherton community.
The girls who continue into the main school benefit from small class sizes and staff ratios of 1:10 in every year group. This provides the opportunity for more individual attention, helping them to achieve their full potential.
Developing social skills at this early age is key. We encourage the children to eat together, learn to share and establish good manners. Equally important are the friendships they cultivate and staff are on hand to offer guidance, as they build these new relationships. Heatherton staff have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour, helping to establish characteristics that will stand them in good stead for the future.
Within a secure setting, pupils learn collaboration, determination and resilience; these soft skills are as important as achieving well academically, which is the ethos shared by all schools within the Berkhamsted Schools Group. Lessons are planned to provide pupils with opportunities to develop these skills. Confidence and self-belief are encouraged, preparing children for life’s hurdles.
Heatherton’s role is to inspire, support and foster a love of learning. Children who start their educational journey in the Nursery benefit from the foundations that are laid at this most important stage, helping to develop our pupils into remarkable people.
