A really good and FREE day trip. Perfect way to kill a few hours and the children really enjoyed seeing all the animals.
There are 3 floors of stuffed animals, bones and cabinets of insects etc. I have a 4 and 2 year old and they were happy for a good hour. We then went to the cafe downstairs for a reasonable lunch, you can also bring your own.
I didnt explore Tring but it looked like there were a few good shops to pop in to as well if you have time.

Easier to drive to than London.
Free entry. Clipboards and colouring pencils for the kids.
Loads of glass cases packed with animals, drawers of insects, eggs and shells.
Excellent for all the family.
Top Tip: Arrive early to enjoy the galleries to yourself.

We took the children to the Natural History museum in Tring the other weekend and they loved it. There's lots to see, so we spent just over an hour looking around the museum and then had lunch downstairs in the cafe (which was actually shut but we had luckily brought our own lunch with us, so probably worth checking if it's open beforehand if you plan to eat there). It was a really enjoyable morning out. It was quite hard to park though, we ended up having to park on a side street as the car park was full. Tring looked lovely, a really pretty village (although I didn't get time to enjoy it as the children don't like look around shops :) - maybe next time!) Oh and one final thing it's free, so you cant beat that!
