I’m Kat, owner of the Vintage Caravan Hotel and mum of two children – Rufus, 2 and Matilda, 6. We moved from London to Chalfont St Giles about 5 years ago and now live in the centre of the village. I recently set up the Vintage Caravan Hotel, which is a beautiful 5 – berth vintage caravan anyone can hire for parties, kids sleepover birthday parties, overflow of guests, weddings, weekends away, holidays and to escape the builders if you need temporary accommodation in your garden.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF THE VINTAGE CARAVAN HOTEL?
We started building work on our own home two years ago and had to move out temporarily, but couldn’t find any short-term accommodation, so I started looking into renting a caravan, but couldn’t find anything locally so stumbled across cute looking vintage caravans and realised there was a lack of fun and flexible family accommodation in our local area. Once I had the idea of buying a vintage caravan and converting it, I realised the potential and the many options I would have with it.
WHERE ARE YOUR 3 FAVOURITE PLACES IN THE CHILTERNS:
There are so many beautiful spots in the Chilterns and it depends on the season. In summer we like visiting Hurley Lock Island and go for a swim in the Thames, the Chess Valley in Rickmansworth is another great spot for some river dipping on a hot day. In the cooler month we like the Chiltern Hills, as the countryside is quite different, it’s just a little bit north from us and the hills still had a dusting of snow last month.
IDEAL WEEKEND?
A lovely walk in the beautiful Chiltern countryside with my partner and our two kids followed by a cosy pub lunch (we like The Royal Standard of England in Coleshill) without kids’ tantrums for a whole day or if at all possible the whole weekend 🙂
ASIDE FROM MOTHERHOOD, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE SO FAR?
There have been many challenges, but I think so far the biggest has been the constant multi-tasking and wearing so many different hats. When we did building work on our house we had to move out for six month and at the same time I was trying to finish a childminding course and also started the Vintage Caravan Hotel, combined the tasks of motherhood and all the issues building work brings. It’s finally all coming together, but at the time I felt like I’d never get there.
WHAT ARE YOUR SOURCES OF INSPIRATION:
I would have to say my children are my biggest inspiration. It takes you back to your own childhood and you become creative in working everything around them yet at the same time you try to keep your own life going and fulfil certain ambitions. But I also get lots of inspiration from friends and family and the general world around me….. and of course Pinterest!
FAVOURITE COCKTAIL:
Mojito
ONE THING ON YOUR BUCKET LIST:
To travel the world with my children when they are a bit older.
