We caught up with friends and business partners Charlotte Figg and Purdy Rubin, founders of local business Purdy & Figg…..
Sum up your business?
We make natural cleaning products that are lovely to use with a current focus on hand sanitiser. Our aim is to transform a chore into something uplifting and enjoyable.
When & why did you start Purdy & Figg?
We started three years ago, teaching people how to make their own cleaning products from simple, natural ingredients because we felt that these products would be nicer to use and better for you, your family and the environment . Demand for our products grew and at the end of last year we started making hand sanitiser.
We hear it’s a family affair?
We deal with product development and Purdy’s two sons, Jack and Charlie, who both have business backgrounds, take care of sales and operations. Purdy’s daughter Rachel, who has just left university, takes care of Customer Service.
What were you doing before?
Purdy was an NHS nurse for 8 years, after training as a homeopathy and has a strong interest in natural products and essential oils. Charlotte has a background in marketing and consumer research, again with a strong interest in essential oils and botany.
What does a typical day look like for you?
It’s very hands on, which we like. Charlotte and I meet in out ‘garage lab’ near Chesham where we work on creating new products, making up essential oil blends and testing them as well as creating content for our workshops and travelling around the country to deliver them.
What’s the process you go through when picking a new scent?
It’s quite structured: we create a brief for ourselves which takes into account where and how the product containing the essential oil blend will be used as well as who we want it to appeal to. We then select oils based not only on how they smell but also what their properties are such as anti-bacterial or calming/balancing
Charlotte s Floral hand sanitiser.
Original Citrus hand sanitiser – this is a very uplifting scent, which appeals equally to men as to women and even children.
Where can people buy your products?
We sell our hand sanitiser online from our website and some independent shops including Su Chases in Old Amersham. At the moment, we only sell our cleaning products via our workshops which we run around the country. You will also see us in a number of lovely hotels, including Cliveden.
Any famous clients?
Trinny Woodall likes our hand sanitiser, as does India Knight.
Tell us about the workshops that you’re running?
The workshops are small and we take care to adhere to Covid 19 restrictions. They last for an hour and a half and cost £15.00 each. They’re a mix of hands on making and demonstration. We introduce people to our favourite natural cleaning ingredients. People take home products they have made in the workshop as well as recipes to make up at home.
What does the future hold for Purdy & Figg?
We are developing our cleaning products range further and these will join the hand sanitiser on the website from early next year. We’re looking forward to running more workshops with people who want to learn about healthy cleaning for you, your family and the planet.
