We caught up with Jo from Matters Group to find out all about her new passion for Open Water Swimming. If you fancy giving it a try, read on to find out more about swimming in the great outdoors….
‘My new favourite thing is swimming in the lake! Who’s have thought it?! You absolutely don’t need to be a super fit Triathlete to take part in open water swimming, it’s for all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities.
I highly recommend Denham Waterski Club– the lake is crystal clear, surrounded by trees (and an HS2 construction site but we can ignore that). Everyone I have met so far, from the team at the lake to the swimmers, have all been super friendly and it’s very well organised and safe.
Personally I find the whole experience amazing, and totally calming, it’s like my crazy busy brain is reset to being calm, almost as soon as I’ve submerged.
I wear a wetsuit, but there are lots of people who brave it in their swim suits. The whole experience is refreshing and energising. There are clean warm changing rooms to change in but also people change on the deck by the lake.
The lake itself is beautiful and clear and you enter by either jumping in or down the steps.
I can’t recommend it highly enough, if you’re interested but feeling a little nervous I’ll come with you! Any excuse for another dip!’

It’s all very easy and simple to get set up. You Need to Download an app: ACTiO which is run by NOWCA.org.
Features of the ACTIO App are:
• Easily find the nearest NOWCA venue to where you are
• You can check out open water swim session info for all NOWCA venues
• You can register and pay for a NOWCA safety wristband (collect the band at your chosen venue)
• Find, book and pay for activities and events (at participating venues)
• It’s free to download
Search for ACTIO in the App Store of your device – Google Play and Apple App Store Icons
For a small fee they provide you with a safety wrist band with a chip in it which includes your booking info and tracks how long you’re in the water for. You collect this on your first swim and keep it. Every time you enter the water a lifeguard will scan it and again when you’ve completed your session.
