Learn about the legacy of the medieval archer.

This August Bank Holiday weekend come and see the Free Company Aquitaine demonstrating the art and skill of the medieval warbow. Watch demonstrations of archery, see and learn about the arming of the knight and talk to the blacksmith/armourer, bowyer, spinster and surgeon about the medieval way of life.

A free company was a late medieval army of mercenaries acting independently of any government and thus “free”. The term “free company” is most often applied to those companies of soldiers which formed in France & Italy after the Peace of Brétigny of 1360.

Aquitaine is a region in the South-West of France which became an English possession from 1154 after the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to King Henry II. It remained so until the end of the Hundred Years’ War during which it was often the focus of intense fighting.

Free Company Aquitaine represents a typical band of Medieval archers and men at arms that may have sought employment in such a company in Aquitaine during the late 14th century.

Come and join us for this family friendly living history event this August bank holiday.
