Event Details

28th & 29th of September, 10am – 4pm
£140 per person (lunch not included)
Join us for this 2-day outdoor oven building course, where you will learn how to make a traditional cob oven with a reclaimed brick and flint base, and a cob top.
This is a unique opportunity to take some time out from the hectic pace of daily life, and spend the weekend getting back to nature, building a beautiful, functional oven made from reclaimed materials and clay dug up from the grounds of The Barn. No experience or skills are required, just an enthusiasm for making things and willing hands!
Our workshop tutor Guy has always been passionate about crafting the traditional way. Over the last few years, he has made a number of cob ovens with different groups and is delighted to be able to pass on his skills and learnings to those who are equally passionate about outdoor living.
On Saturday we will focus on creating the fire brick base, ensuring it is carefully levelled and insulated using the right materials. We will leave this base to dry overnight, and meet again on Sunday to complete the top cob oven. Cob is an earthen building material that is made of clay, sand, straw and water, and the best way to make it is to take your shoes and socks off and stomp about in it with your bare feet. There will be feet washing facilities available, but it you might want to bring a towel and a change of clothes. Shorts and flip-flops are the ideal clothing to wear for this activity.
The cost for this jam-packed 2-day course is £140 per person and all materials needed to build the oven. Please bring your own lunch. For anyone requiring overnight accommodation, the hotel adjacent to The Barn (Chartridge Lodge Hotel) offers very reasonable rates if you book through us. Simply email for more info.
If you are also interested in doing the Cider Making Workshop on Saturday 28th 10am-12.30pm then we have a reduced price of £110 for Build a Wood-Fired Outdoor Cob Oven as you will be missing a couple of hours in the morning, but don't worry you will soon catch up.
Guy also runs sourdough bread making courses at his country home in Bovingdon, where he teaches groups how to make real, slow fermented dough in the traditional way. He has also run pizza parties for kids.
As always please do get in touch if you have any questions at all, we very much look forward to welcoming you up to The Barn.
