On Saturday we visited the recently opened Griffin bistro for dinner, which is located in the heart of Old Amersham, in the building where Ask Italian used to be.
Upon arrival at The Griffin, we received a warm welcome and we were shown to our table at the front of the restaurant, a smaller room which had 4 tables. There is a larger dining area at the back with a bar, which I’d like to try next time. One of the first thing I noticed was the stunning interior, designed by Ali Hearn, a local interior designer. Ali has created a breathtakingly beautiful space, just peruse The Griffin’s insta and you’ll see what I mean 😍
The dinner menu, which has been created by head chef Mikey Seferynski (who has featured in the Michelin Guide consistently for years), is small (which I prefer 😜) serving seasonal dishes using the freshest & finest handpicked ingredients.
To start with, Mats had the ‘special’ Trout Tartar with gooseberries, pink peppercorns, crispy skin & coastal herbs which was fresh & light and our waitress recommended I should try the chilled tomato consomme, which was delicious and packed full of flavour and a perfect light starter. For the mains, we both ordered the Dry Aged Flat Iron Steak – it was sublime, definitely one of the tastiest steaks we have eaten in a long time. It comes with chimichurri sauce and roasted tomatos and we shared a side of the flamed Sweet Potato Fries which were the best sweet potato fries he’s ever had according to Mats 😁 We finished off with the cheese platter but I was so full that I couldn’t eat any of it. Mats reassured me that it was amazing! I definitely missed out.
From start to finish the whole evening was perfect. The food was outstanding, portions were generous, the wine delicious (we had the Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc – very moorish!) and the ambience very welcoming. Price & quality wise, it’s very similar to Pluma and The Three Oaks. Another fantastic addition to the Amersham foodie scene and one we plan to frequent often!
