You may be planning a weekend away or a long getaway in the sunshine, whatever you have planned these summer holidays, here are a few simple steps to make your home safe while you’re away.

Make your home look occupied

You could go to the effort ‘MacCaulay Culkin style’ in Home Alone and put cardboard cut-outs in your windows but we find timer switches for lighting, radios and televisions to go on and off at various times during the day are very effective and inexpensive.

Remember to cancel deliveries too and don’t be tempted to close all your curtains, this just screams ’we’re not home’.

Ask a friend to keep an eye on your home

It’s a good idea to ask someone to pop in and pick up your post from time to time and perhaps park outside your house to make it look like someone’s home.

Hold off on social media posts until you’re home

Try and wait until you’re home before posting holiday snaps on social media, or checking yourself into the beach club, you don’t want to advertise that your house is empty whilst you’re enjoying your break away.

Ensure your doors & windows are locked

It’s very easy to leave a door or window unlocked when you leave the house so just have a quick double check remembering all access points are secured too such as your garden gate, garages and sheds.  Don’t leave spare keys in obvious places such as under doormats or plant pots.

Remove valuables from sight

Make sure you haven’t left personal computers, tablets, jewellery etc.. on show.  And if you’re leaving your car(s) at home make sure the keys are out of view and safely hidden away.

Service & Set your Burglar Alarm

People often forget to set their alarm in the throes of holiday excitement.  A recent survey showed that just under half of UK home owners with alarms don’t programme them before jetting off on holiday.  This not only leaves your home vulnerable it also may invalidate your home insurance.  If you have a burglar alarm, book your alarm service well in advance of your holiday to make sure it’s in full working order and use it!

Just follow these 6 easy tips while you’re on your summer holidays, and you can enjoy your trip knowing that you have taken all the proper measures to ensure your home stays safe and secure while you’re away.
