Earlier this week, Mr Chiltern Chatter turned the big 4 oh! To celebrate, he took the day off and we decided to chance our luck and try and get a table for lunch at The Coach in Marlow. The Coach doesn’t take booking – there isn’t even a phone number on the website, so we rocked up just after 12 and were lucky enough to get a table for 2, as the majority of the tables were already taken.
The Coach is small – there is an L shaped bar as you enter with bar stools, and this is surrounded by a dozen small tables. The restaurant serves all small plates – think tapas-style eating applied to traditional Brit-French dishes.
Our waitress advised us to start with 2 to 3 dishes per person and that the dishes would arrive as they are cooked. The sizes are small but they are packed full of flavour. We ordered The Coach Burger with Pulled Pork & Dill Pickle, Duck Liver Parfait with Fig & Cherry Chutney, Roast Autumn Vegetable Salad with Whipped Goats Cheese, Fish Fritter of the Day with Tartare Sauce, Triple Cooked Chips and Mushroom “Risotto” Claude Bosi. The food was spectacular and it’s easy to see why they were just awarded a Michelin Star. We finished with the Tiramisu with Expresso Ice Cream & Chocolate Soil.
Chiltern Chatter Verdict:
The food was outstanding, a lovely birthday treat! The Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and the service was prompt. I really liked the laid back and casual setting! They don’t take reservations so plan accordingly – either arrive at noon when they open or a late lunch around 2pm. Definitely suited to smaller group 2 to 4 people max. Price wise I thought that it was on the high side but still good value, given the quality of the food. Our bill came to £60 for the 2 of us and this included 2 pints and a coffee. We will definitely be back.
