terrible food and service

terrible service and food today. Kitchen needs serious rethink: if you are incapable of serving decent fish and chips in 1,5h than you are in trouble

A nice local

We went to the Merlins on Friday for an impromptu meal out. We arrived early so we managed to get a table without booking. The bar was very busy, I think people had cabin fever from the snow :) We sat in the back around the middle of the restaurant but I asked to be moved as it was really cold with lots of draughts. We moved tables and it was only marginally better but I was told that it's chilly as it's a grade 2 listed building. I noticed that they had a few heaters though to try and warm the space up. The food was good but I think that they need to simplify their menu. I wish that they offered a menu more like the Jolly Cricketers in Seer Green and also I think that they need to have a children's menu (they can do smaller portions of some of the bigger dishes) and have they definitely need special evenings like so many of the other local places do eg pie & mash for £8 / Fish & chips for £8 or early bird menus etc to attract more people into the pub. My husband said he steak was delicious, really good quality beef. The staff were lovely, really friendly. We were served by a young girl and the deputy manager who has been at the pub for 6 weeks. I really want the Merlins to be great and hope they take on board customer feedback. BTW in the summer the pub would be fantastic for families as they have a lovely big garden.

Good food but...

My husband and I went to the Merlins for the first time a few weeks ago for dinner for Fish & Fizz Thursday (basically fish specials and fizz is £15). We arrived at about 8 o'clock - we hadnt pre booked but the restaurant was pretty full. We ordered a bottle of fizz which was on the warm side which wasnt great - surprising when it's fizz Thursday and it's only 8pm. The food was good - I had one of the fish specials which was very tasty and my husband had the burger stack for £16 which is in my opinion expensive for a burger. I think that the Merlins has the potential to be a great place. The decor is amazing, it's a really nice space but there are a few things that let it down (and hopefully will be rectified in time). Firstly it's expensive for what it is, which is a shame as I think that it puts people off from going there on a regular basis, the prices mean that you go for a special occasion.... I also think that (based on the night we went )there werent enough staff serving in the restaurant. There were 2 people waiting all the tables and so we did sit and wait a while until someone came up to our table and lastly the fizz should not be warm especially when there are loads of fridges and it's Fizz Thursday :) On the night we bumped into our friends who were also dining there and they commented that their prosecco was warm too. The Merlins has the potential to be a great place but I think they need to address these issues first and mainly the price because at the moment from what I gather people are staying away because of the prices they charge.

A fab refurb

I went here with a group of girls for drinks and we had a really fun evening. The wine list was extensive and there appeared to be a great selection of cask & bottle beers. We didnt eat at the pub so cant comment on the food. The location of the pub on the village green in the pretty village of Chalfont St Giles is idyllic. The pub itself looks amazing inside and is a real transformation from the previously run down pub. There is also a brilliant garden which backs onto the River Misbourne - perfect for drinks during the long summer afternoon & evenings.
