How did your career change after becoming a mum?

Having worked in a school for five years when my children were young, I felt the need for a new challenge.

What first inspired you to start Lashes and Brows Chalfont?

I was looking for a new career and having loved the eyelash extensions I had before myself, I knew how much they could enhance your appearance. The idea of flexible working from home was also a bonus.

And how did you move from idea to actually taking your first business steps?

I decided to retrain in an area that I already had a great interest in so with the help of a friend, who opened my eyes to a possible new career, I decided to gain the necessary qualifications.

What skills or experience from your career do you use in your business?

Being able to communicate effectively with people, paying close attention to detail and having a good work ethic.

Who is your target customer and how do you find and market to them?

16-70 years. No one is too old or young for a touch of glamour.

What are the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in starting your own business

Time management, interpretating client’s wishes, and managing expectations.

Your biggest successes to date?

Having achieved my degree in Psychology I went on to a successful Public Relations career at Marks and Spencer Head Office and within the Product Development team.

To grow the business to a stage where I have the perfect balance of work and home life.

What has most surprised you about yourself in starting your business?

How patient I could be doing such delicate work.

How do you juggle running a business and family life?

It is difficult for all mums to find the right balance between work and home life. Somedays it is easier to do than others. Planning is crucial, I never leave the house without my diary.

What advice do you have for other mums who want to start a business?

Know your audience/clients. Customer satisfaction is invaluable. Always go the extra mile to make sure your customers are happy. Go for it!

How do you relax?

A dog walk in Cookham or along the river in Marlow to a pub for lunch is ideal on a Sunday afternoon, or dining out in the evenings with friends.

I like the fact that I live in a pretty village in the countryside and am only 25 minutes away from London for great nights out and plenty of shopping.
