Winser London is the British online luxury womenswear brand founded by mother of one, Kim Winser. Winser London was only launched six months ago and has already achieved great things, all down to Kim’s passion for the business and exceptional hard work.
Sum up your business in a sentence:
Exceptional quality, particular attention to detail, on fashion trend but not fashion victim and prices to surprise!
What did you do before starting up your business?
I started my career at Marks and Spencer as a management trainee, then through hard graft and working with a good team and of course a little good luck was promoted to youngest ever Director and the first female. I then decided to invest in business as well as run it so bought into both Pringle of Scotland, Aquascutum as Global president and CEO and then Chairman of Agent Provocateur.
When did you start your business and why?
Starting my own business was all about building something that no one else was doing. I felt there was a gap in the market: what’s on offer is either expensive luxury goods or throwaway fashion. The mid-market brands have gradually eroded quality by investing the money in business structures rather than in the quality of the clothes. Then there are the older traditional brands, which can be better quality, but so often out of date.
The best part of your day / running your own business?
I absolutely love what I do, so it doesn’t feel like work. I am so lucky that my job is my hobby. I work exceptionally hard but then building a business that I expect to be a substantial global brand in time is never going to be easy, I’m lucky I have such a strong team working with me.
And the worst?
Knowing there are so many things still to do but as a new business I must be patient! When to launch shoes.. then bags.. launch in France… Italy then, the USA there is such a list but I want to make sure we are ready before we take each step, my priority now is beautiful quality clothes at surprisingly good prices to all our current customers.
How do you juggle running a business and family life?
My son is 15 and I have always been a single Mum. I have always been committed to being at home in the evenings even if it means working again after he has gone to bed. I have never hidden that my passion and priority is my son and his upbringing. I love my business and no-one could question the energy and determination I’ve put into each company despite being in second place.
What challenges have you faced?
When you run your own business, almost every day presents a new challenge. It is vital to stay focused to your vision but always watch and listen as that is how you see lifestyle trends moving and know you have to respond and react, however challenging.
Your biggest success?
So far, achieving everything Winser London has achieved since launching.
Opening our shop in Gerrards Cross has been a very successful move, we are also now in Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge and Peter Jones and we are only 6 months old -we still have so much more I want to achieve, but I am pleased, very pleased.
What business tip/advice would you offer new mumpreneurs?
Follow your passion, make sure you really understand your market and be prepared to graft hard!
It’s happening now….
What are you listening to at the moment?
I so want someone to load up my itunes for me, there is far too much of my son’s music on my phone which I’m having to listen to!
What’s your favorite tipple?
Anything with friends, but of course a glass of bubbles is hard to beat.
Your simple pleasure?
I love walking my Springer Spaniel and leaving my phone at home.
I would say The English Patient or Breakfast at Tiffany depending on my mood.
I’m reading Steve Jobs bio now- a great and interesting read.
Tell us a joke?
