Sum up your business in a sentence: A luxury private member’s club for pre-school children offering a busy schedule of classes, seven days a week.
What did you do before starting up your business? Account director at an advertising agency.
When did you start your business and why? Sanctum launched on the 20th November 2013. I started it as I identified a gap in the market after having my daughter. After working hard for years and then having my daughter, I was amazed at how basic the facilities were for mums and babies. Going out and about was hard enough, nevermind having to sit on a dirty hall floor, drink lukewarm instant coffee and change my daughter’s nappy on the cold tiles of a public toilet. All this gave me the idea to provide the opposite for mums and their children – affordable luxury in a safe, clean and chemical-free environment, along with free parking and decent coffee!
The best part of your day / running your own business? Opening the doors in the morning and welcoming the mummies and children. Listening to the mums and being able to tweak the business model to suit them.
And the worst? Cleaning up at the end of the day ☺
How do you juggle running a business and family life? I have a very supportive husband who works from home (and is also a website designer!) and a wonderful lady called Rosie who helps looks after Amber.
What challenges have you faced? Finding finance & premises.
Your biggest success? Members joining and receiving really good feedback from members, the teachers at Sanctum and the media – it’s really motivating!
What business tip/advice would you offer new mumpreneurs? Working for yourself is harder and far more stressful than working a full time job, but also far more rewarding!
Business dream? To open more branches of Sanctum.
How do you relax? With my family, walking the dog, eating out at local pubs and catching up with friends.
What do you love most about where you live? Seer Green has a lovely community spirit, it’s lovely to leave the house and be able to say hello to the villagers!
What are you listening to at the moment? London Grammar
What’s your favourite tipple? Champagne, of course!
Your simple pleasure? Reading
Favourite film? Sliding Doors
Favourite book? Papillon
Tell us a joke? What’s the difference between bogies and Brussels sprouts? You can’t get children to eat Brussels sprouts!
