IN THE SPOTLIGHT

– Rugbytots Bucks Director, Personal Trainer & Mum of Two Little boys,

Maria Nolan

All I have ever been passionate about is Health & Fitness, prior to having children I was a Personal Trainer and also trained as a Stunt Woman!!!
I love being active and helping other people improve their life with fitness, nutrition and introducing them to a new life style, this is what makes me smile.

When I became pregnant with my first child I realized I would have to change my career as the hours weren’t very convenient with a small baby but I still wanted to do something that was involved with fitness.
That’s when I came across Rugbytots. It was perfect, I could introduce a new generation to the wonderful world of sport and everything that comes with it- discipline, respect, motor skills, hand-to-eye coordination, balance and being part of a team.

MariaNolan3Imagine an environment where children as young as two years old can be taught about the virtues of working as a team whilst improving their confidence and learning about discipline.
In a world where children seem more interested in tablets and televisions than bike rides and climbing trees, a South Buckinghamshire sporting franchise is hoping to change all that.

Welcome to the world of South Bucks Rugbytots, a fun-packed programme where basic rugby practice is intertwined with aiding crucial motor skills and simply having fun.
Director and mum-of-two Maria Nolan heads the county’s version of the now-international business.

I have spent the past 3 years bringing this innovative play programme to children across the whole of South Buckinghamshire, whilst bringing up my two sons (3yrs & 10 months).
I played a lot of sport in school, but rugby was never offered when she was growing up even though the boys had the option, the girls didn’t. That’s partly why I think Rugbytots is so exciting as it is offered to girls and boys.

I was born in an era when kids were always outside climbing trees and riding bikes. There weren’t such things as iPads, and we only watched a little bit of television – there wasn’t as much choice as there is now. I think it is fantastic that we are encouraging kids to take part in regular exercise.

MariaNolan2Rugbytots is offered to children from two to seven years old, it is designed to develop children’s motor skills and confidence whilst having fun in a team environment.
Rugbytots Bucks has already achieved great success locally, with popular sessions held in Beaconsfield, Seer Green, Gerrards Cross, Amersham, Marlow, Farnham Common, High Wycombe & Maidenhead.
Sessions are split between three different age groups with interaction from parents actively encouraged to help support the youngest participants.
The kids love being able to show off their skills to their parents – it is a lovely thing for parents to do with their children. We are a very family orientated company and the children love chasing mum and dad or playing a game of tag with them.
There’s nothing more rewarding for me than watching the children develop confidence and the understanding at such a young age of being a team member, their smiles tell us all we need to know…

Maria, aged 34, has had a career in Sports for over 12 years, starting as a Personal Trainer and Rehabilitation specialist for Chelsea Football Club, and at The Chelsea Harbour Club, during this time she trained with The London Stunt School to become a Stunt Woman.
But it is her most important role, as mother to Michael, three, and 10-month-old Ethan, that has helped her understand the specialist teaching needed to gain the concentration and trust of very young children.

“We use lots of analogies. To get the two year olds to open their hands in the right position, we say you need to ‘clap your hands and open your book’ and then ‘cuddle the ball like a teddy bear’ to encourage them to hold the ball tight,” she said.
“When they score a try, we tell them to ‘squash a worm’ so they keep hold of the ball and don’t throw it on the floor.
“What we love is watching the children’s confidence grow right in front of our eyes.”

I want to take this as far as it can possibly go. I am fortunate due to the popular demand to be expanding our locations and sessions held in South Bucks and am keen to be contacted by coaches who may be interested to work with this our fantastic team.”

As a Personal Trainer I see this as a massive step towards regular exercise. At the age of two, you are getting someone in the weekly routine of exercise. As they grow a passion and love for it, that can only continue.

MariaNolanIn addition to all of this I am doing a charity bike ride at the end of August. To celebrate England’s hosting of the Rugby Union World Cup this year, a group of Rugbytots staff, franchisees, coaches, parents and friends will be embarking on a 320 mile charity bike ride from the 27th to 30th August from Millennium Stadium to Twickenham via World Cup host stadiums Kingsholm and Brighton. We will be undertaking this challenge to raise money for our chosen charity partner Wooden Spoon, the Children’s Charity of Rugby.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would like to sponsor me-
